Insider perspective, a different approach:
My work captures the genuine and unique moments of a wedding celebration. I approach wedding photography from an insider's perspective rather than an outsider looking in. My focus is on documenting honest emotions and interactions. In order to establish familiarity and comfort I ask that:
- We meet in a relaxed setting before the wedding to take intimate portraits.
- I attend the welcome dinner or rehearsal, allowing everyone to get acquainted with me (and will photograph some heartfelt moments).
- I respectfully request to be seated among the guests during the wedding. In this way I shift the traditional photographer-subject dynamic, and create an environment in which everyone feels more at ease and open, resulting in more authentic photographs.
en route to a Brooklyn wedding
In 1992 I attended my first wedding to photograph it. A good friend and prolific documentary photographer asked me to photograph her sister’s wedding with the assignment to be on the inside and reject any preconceived idea of a formulaic wedding photograph.
Hundreds of weddings later I am still at it. (with the same camera)
My photographs from weddings have been published in Vogue, Harper’s BAZAAR, New York Magazine, Martha Stewart’s Living to name a few.
I am one of the 4 founders of the RITUAL Collective.
We started this collective to create a platform to show new perspectives, push boundaries and organize art community events.
