FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION. ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES.
There is a difference between creating pictures and intuiting them. Photographer Holger Thoss practices the latter, relying on instinct, movement, and awareness to uncover moments that might otherwise go unseen. His work invites both the viewer and the photographer to enter a space of freedom where attention expands through intentional pause.
A photograph, by definition, is a snapshot of the past. It influences how we construct our own memories, from the people we glimpse on the street to the family rituals that unite us. The common thread between Thoss’s main projects—WALK, PROGENY, and SURRENDER—treat memory as a living, mutable force, something that can be reframed, cropped, and expanded through shifting perspectives.
“If one thinks about everything, one might not see anything at all.” Holger Thoss

COMMISSIONS
Thoss has a need to experience, interpret, and celebrate life through art. When working with Thoss, you establish a foundation of mutual trust that informs not only the work but also the satisfaction one feels when experiencing the collaborative process. You and the artist are investing in a unique interpretation of life, whether it be a framed print or a handmade book.
PROGENY commissions result in a framed panorama print, while SURRENDER and SENSE OF PLACE projects issue a handmade artist book. These products are hand-delivered and/or installed by Thoss himself, concluding your collaboration with a celebration of the trust and intimacy built during your partnership.

HANDMADE BOOKS & FOLIOS
Thoss creates project-specific artist books and folios from scratch, executing every stage from layout design to cover production. The books and folios are bound by either Thoss himself or bookbinder Judy Ivry. Depending on the project, Thoss can collaborate with a commercial printer.
FRAMING & DELIVERY
For more than thirty years, Thoss has collaborated with General Art Co. Thoss aims to deliver and install each framed print he creates, a personal ritual that reinforces the collaboration between you and the artist.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATIONS
Multimedia collaboration remains a grounding force in Thoss’ practice, creating opportunities for the two-dimensional photograph to expand into motion and performance.
Public space and access remain central themes in Thoss’ work. He regards exhibitions as extensions of this ethos and believes art should always be in dialogue with the larger community. Exhibitions of Thoss’ work have taken place at the Düsseldorf+photo Biennale, The Brooklyn Public Library, New York University, and Ritual Collective Summer 2024.

PROFILE: HOLGER THOSS
Holger Thoss is a Brooklyn-based photographer specializing in intimate family portraits, candid wedding photography, and handmade artist books.
Born near Cologne in 1966, Thoss came to the United States as a Work Scholar at Aperture before completing his training at the International Center of Photography. He later ran the darkroom at Magnum Photos, working with photographers including Gilles Peress, James Nachtwey, Susan Meiselas, and Elliott Erwitt. For the past thirty years, Thoss has operated his own photography studio, producing fine art prints, artist books, and documentary wedding and family photography.
CORE PHILOSOPHY: THE ATTENTIVE PRESENCE
Thoss identifies as a chronicler rather than a traditional photographer, utilizing the camera as a "time machine" to construct a future legacy in the present moment. This process requires an intentional presence within the moments he and his subjects inhabit, and is grounded in the following disciplines:
- Adopting Ludwig Wittgenstein’s motto “Look, Don’t Think!”, Thoss prioritizes visceral intuition over pre-planned narratives. He rejects the formulaic in favor of the authentic.
- Thoss draws on his Hapkido practice to cultivate the disicpline of presence that informs his work. The core tenets of this martial art—focused breathing, fluid motion, and heightened awareness—enable him to achieve a state of self-forgetfulness and total immersion. This discipline transforms him from a detached observer into a complete "insider," allowing him to navigate intimate spaces with attention.
THE FINAL OBJECT: ARTIST BOOKS AND FINE PRINTS
Thoss’s work reaches its definitive form as a handmade artist book or collector’s print. For him, the digital file is a ghost with unrealized potential; the work finds its full power as an enduring physical object, functioning as an artwork in its own right.
All books are created by Thoss using museum-grade materials with collaborations from specialized bookbinders. These collectible objects and photographs are sought by discerning cultural figures, entering private archives that value the intersection of personal narrative and craftsmanship.
MAJOR BODIES OF WORK
PROGENY: Thoss transforms the traditional family portrait into large-scale panoramas, combining multiple perspectives into a single frame. These meticulously crafted works provide collectors with a visual legacy that reimagines family as a living network of relationships and rituals.
WALK: For the past decade, Thoss has photographed people and place intuitively, guided by instinct rather than deliberation. The result is an evolving archive of contemporary public life that reveals unexpected narratives and generational echoes often missed in passing. WALK has grown into a series of annual handmade artist books and sparked an ongoing collaboration with composer Aruán Ortiz.
SURRENDER: Approaching marriage as one of humanity’s last universal rituals, Thoss captures moments shaped by mutual surrender, reframing human connection as an intuitive, celebratory act of letting go. Thoss embraces a minimalist aesthetic over fleeting industry trends, creating work designed to remain impactful for years. He weaves these celebrations within one’s generational legacy through the handmade artist book.
LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION, COMMUNITY
As cofounder of RITUAL Collective, Thoss seeks to transform public perception of wedding photography by highlighting the artistic potential inherent in these images.
This mission is extended through active mentorship and community building, including: EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP: Thoss facilitates photography workshops, immersive retreats, and one-on-one editing sessions, guiding photographers to develop their own documentary and fine art photography skills with attentive presence.
ART SALONS: By hosting artist talks, book launches, and community roundtables, Thoss and his RITUAL cofounders—Olya Vysotskaya, Meredith Heuer, and John Dolan—create opportunities for emerging photographers to collaboratively shape the narratives behind their work.
CURATORIAL PROJECTS: In collaboration with curator Elsa Seignol, RITUAL organized a landmark exhibition highlighting the interplay between the vernacular and the artistic in wedding photography. Photographs from RITUAL members, Counterpart Photos, and a local open call were featured, creating unique dialogues between emerging and established photographers.
